How to Add Routines to Your Cat’s Life

Cats may be independent, but they’re also creatures of habit. While they have a unique way of expressing gratitude, maintaining a routine will mean a lot to your feline best friend.

There are four key ways to incorporate routine into your cat’s life.

1. MEALTIME

Always thinking about the next meal.

Keeping a regular mealtime is a great way to add security and predictability to your cat’s day. If there are multiple pets or cats around, a little privacy and an individual bowl for each cat is important. When it comes to cats, mealtime is sacred.

Pro tip: a low sided bowl can prevent whisker fatigue. Yes, that’s a real thing!

2. EXERCISE TIME

Cats like to move it move it.

Movement is an essential way for cats to channel their energy and stay busy. Regular playtime also means regular bonding opportunities.

Interactive toys offer mental stimulation, which can reduce stress and prevent disruptive behaviors in cats. Plus, keeping them moving can prevent them from becoming overweight.

Some feeders and toys even combine exercise and mealtime for double the reward.

3. BONDING TIME

This one’s for the humans, too.

Spending quality time with your cat keeps them close and calm. Brushing and grooming are great ways to add some luxury to each day. If your cat is food-motivated, regular training and rewarding with treats will give them something to look forward to.

Ear rub? Paw massage? Some scratches? Spend some time learning how your cat likes to be pet. You might notice them coming back around the same time each day for more.

4. BEDTIME

A place to cuddle.

Cats sleep almost twice as much as humans. At 15-20 hours per day, it’s important they have a comfy, quiet place to retreat.

Although they sleep a lot, it’s common for cats to be night owls. Keeping a few quiet toys near their bed gives them something to do while their humans are asleep.

For cats experiencing anxiety or stress, calming supplements can be a great addition to help them rest and recharge.

WHAT ABOUT BARKING HOURS?

While cats and dogs have their differences, they both tend to thrive on a schedule. If you have a dog in the house, try adding some habits and routine to their life.
